AI & Me: Building Community

What's Our Objective?

Become AI Changemakers! Our task is to identify a local problem and propose an AI driven solution. Challenges can be things like environmental conservation, school improvement, community health, or education. It’s up to you…literally.

Step 1: Choose a Problem or Challenge

A few examples:

  • In the Environment it could be reducing litter or conserving water or recycling.
  • In Health it could be encouraging physical activity, getting more girls involved in sports or healthy eating habits.
  • It could also be something like a better designed play area that is inclusive to all kids.

It’s up to you. Be an AI Changemaker!

Step 2: Research and Brainstorm

Start with AI tools like Google Gemini or ChatGPT. Both are free to students. Research what might be causing the problem. Is there more than one cause? Can you break the problem into smaller bite size challenges? Brainstorm potential AI driven solutions. What does this mean? Use an AI powered technology or tool to enhance your problem solving ability.

Step 3: Create Your Project

Let’s look at 2 examples of projects designed to solve a community problem:

Problem: There’s trash in your schoolyard.
Solution: An AI powered app where students report trash locations. The app awards points redeemable for school rewards when trash is picked up. This makes the school area safer and more fun for local families. Could you tie this in to increase your school’s trash pick-up?

Problem: Your local park is underused and/or not easily accessed by special needs kids.
Solution: An AI driven map that suggests park activities based on kids’ abilities and available equipment. Let’s get more kids active and having fun!

Things to Ask Yourself

To evaluate your AI and Me Building Community Project ask yourself:

Clarity: Did you clearly state your problem? Do you need more information or input from a community member.

Creativity: Have you used creativity and innovation in your solution? Do you need to learn more about the tools? Is there a different approach?

Relevance: Does your solution solve the problem? Should your solution be broken down to phases or steps? Can you get community support for each phase?

Feasibility: Can your solution be implemented using AI tools? Are these AI tools helping you? These tools are changing all the time.
