Sustainable Fashion Innovation Workshop

Let’s talk fashion design, innovative materials and the lifecycle of our clothes.

Did you know fashion is one of the most polluting industries in the world?

Social media and instagram runways drive a market for Fast Fashion inexpensive clothes, made cheaply that move quickly from the runway or red carpet to the store. Fast Fashion clothes are often made from plastics and end up in the landfill.

Why does it matter? Each year the clothing we throw away amounts to 11 million tons in US landfills alone. This has an impact on the environment and fashion’s carbon footprint. The fashion industry produces more carbon emissions than the aviation and shipping industries combined.

Fashion Brands like Nike, Stella McCartney, Serena Williams put new emphasis on sustainability. Fashion week, a greener red carpet, green is the new black and social influencers highlight sustainable style.

What do we mean by Sustainable Fashion? Sustainable Fashion is eco-fashion, ethical fashion, fair trade fashion and green fashion. Sustainable Fashion is responsible fashion for all parts of the fashion lifecycle including you and me.

How are designers and innovators working to make a change in materials and human design? What role do Wearables play? What is your impact?

Let’s ideate, collaborate and innovate with our ideas in Sustainable Fashion. Girls will present their design solutions in the Friday Showcase.

We will tour the College of Design studios and hear from key UMN College of Design faculty about Sustainable Fashion at the U.

If women ruled the world what would they wear?
